Documenting defensive firearm use in America.

GunFacts.us is building a source-driven record of reported incidents in which firearms are used in defense of people or property, while promoting safe, lawful and responsible ownership.

Every published incident should include a traceable source. Submitted reports are reviewed before publication.

Defensive Gun Use Tracker

Incidents, not anecdotes.

Each record is intended to include the date, location, event category, source links, firearm-use details, outcome and verification status.

Methodology

Clear rules for what gets counted.

GunFacts.us should distinguish confirmed events from incomplete reporting. A firearm simply being present does not automatically make an event a defensive gun use.

Traceable source

Published incidents should cite police, court, government, or identifiable news reporting whenever available.

Defined defensive action

The record identifies what defensive action occurred: display, threat deterrence, shots fired, or another documented intervention.

Verification status

Records can be marked Verified, Partially Verified, Under Review, Disputed, or Retracted.

Corrections preserved

Updates should be logged rather than silently rewriting the history of a record.

Responsible Ownership

Rights come with serious responsibility.

GunFacts.us supports lawful firearm ownership by responsible adults and emphasizes training, secure storage, safe handling and compliance with applicable law.

Safe handling

Treat every firearm with the care appropriate to a lethal tool. Follow established firearm-safety rules and understand the firearm before use.

Secure storage

Store firearms in a manner appropriate to your household and prevent access by children, prohibited persons and unauthorized users.

Training & law

Seek competent training and verify current federal, state and local requirements through official sources.
